Critical equipment in various industries depends on solar power systems to provide electrical power for remote, off grid operation. Failure of solar cells reduces power generated by a solar power system. This presentation concerns a solar string consisting of mixed type of cells in terms of failure probability values. A general description on how to determine a solar cell-level failure probability is provided, to account for competing failure modes. The correlation of a string’s power loss to the number of cell failures is discussed. Then, a more comprehensive power loss model is developed for a solar string with two different types of cells. An example of a hypothetical solar string with 60 cells is presented and the results are discussed.
