In the automotive industry, the accelerated life test is typically designed for 95-percentile user or so in terms of vehicle or component usage with a given reliability for the service life. Correlating this given reliability and 95-percentile point directly to the field reliability performance and warranty cost is not always straightforward. The traditional approach has some major drawbacks. Some of them are (1) single data point in 95-percentile usage does not represent the entire fleet at population level; (2) using 95-percentile usage is generally conservative and leads to a larger sample doe the test; (3) test results allow us to estimate the reliability against 95-percentile users only, not entire fleet. This presentation describes an accelerated life test design method that utilizes the distributional usage and stress information gathered from field data to reflect the real customer base such that the test results can be analyzed directly to assess the field reliability impact and warranty cost.
